It Was Time To Spread Awareness
When Millie and her partner Lewis found out they were pregnant with twins, they couldn’t have been more thrilled. Twins ran in Millie’s family and it was exciting to bring her own pair of babies into the world! But just as they were about to relish in the good news, doctors told them that their unborn children suffered from a condition called anencephaly. Anencephaly causes a part of the brain to under-develop and most babies generally don’t make it to birth or long after.
Sure enough, Millie and Lewis lost one of the twin girls, Skye, soon after their emergency C-section. They were absolutely crushed, but the new parents gathered around their surviving daughter, Callie – relishing in her beauty. That’s when another mother in the NICU said something to Millie that caused her to burst into tears, she explained to Babble.
“You’re so lucky you haven’t got twins….”
That little comment sent Millie running out of the room, sobbing uncontrollably. She would give anything to have both of her little girls!
There had to be a way to stop this type accidental offense from happening to parents suffering from losing a baby during a multiple birth. That’s when the idea of the purple butterfly sticker came to Millie!
“None of the other parents knew what had happened or anything about Skye. The comment was completely innocent and more out of humor…. They weren’t to know that I did at one point have two. But the comment nearly broke me. I ran out [of] the room in tears and they had no idea why. I didn’t have the heart to tell them what had happened. A simple sticker would have avoided that entire situation.”
Now both Lewis and Millie are vigilant about raising awareness for their cause, aptly named the “Skye High Foundation.” The purple butterflies have popped up in NICU units all over the world thanks to their hard work!
Growing From The Support
Even though they know they can’t bring Skye back, they do know that they can help other parents going through the same thing – and that makes it more than worth it!
“Ultimately I will never be able to stop this from happening but the more support groups we can set up and put things in place like the stickers the better it will be. It’s the hardest thing anyone has to deal with.”
Lewis and Millie don’t want anyone else to experience the heartbreak that they were forced to confront at such a young age. The brave couple has even started a Crowdfunding page to raise money for families in similar situations!
Spending Time With Family
For now, Lewis and Millie are enjoying every second with Callie before her health declines, too. She is getting all of the loves and cuddles a newborn can handle!
