Passing wind is often laughed about and it can be embarrassing and very uncomfortable if you do it in front of other people. However, this is nothing to be ashamed of, it is actually very healthy. Farting indicates a well-functioning digestive system and it is a sign that the level of bacteria in your intestines is balanced.
The fart is made from the following gasses:
- Nitrogen 9%
- Hydrogen 21%
- Carbon dioxide 9%
- Methane 7%
- Oxygen 4%
- Hydrogen sulfide 1% (this is where the smell comes from)
The average person passes wind about 5-10 times a day, mostly during sleep. Flatulence is mostly caused by foods that are high in carbohydrates such as beans, artichokes, sweet potatoes, soy, wheat, nuts, oats and dairy products.
In order to stop farting, you should only eat refined sugars, but this is extremely unhealthy and unnatural.
Contrary to popular belief, women fart just as much as men do and their farts are even more concentrated and odorous compared to men who ate the same quantity and types of food.
No matter how often or why you fart, here are reasons why you should never hold in a fart:
- Bloat reduction
Farting releases the bloating due to a gas build-up in your gut. If you feel that your pants are a little tight, you probably should pass wind.
- Helps balance diet
Your body reacts differently to different foods and farting helps you find out if your diet is balanced. So, your farts will stink more if you eat red meat and if you include more carbs in your diet you will probably fart more often but the gas will have a neutral odor.
- Reduce abdominal pain
Intestinal distension is the pain you feel when you are holding gas in, and letting the gas go will reduce the pain. If you have trouble doing so, massage your belly gently to help the gas travel out of your gastrointestinal tract.
- Colon health
Holding farts can also cause hemorrhoid inflammation and harm the colon. In case you already suffer from colon issues pas the gas whenever you feel the need to.
- Smelling your farts is healthy
Whether you admit it or not, you probably like the smell of your farts. This is probably due to the fact that farting is very healthy because the hydrogen sulfide that is produced during digestion protects the cells from suffering mitochondrial damage thus prevents heart disease, arthritis and stroke.
- Determine food allergies
Food allergies and intolerance also increase flatulence, for example lactose intolerance or coeliac disease. If you suspect you have an allergy and you pass more gas after consuming certain foods, consult your doctor for advice.
- It’s pleasurable
Everyone has experienced a feeling of pleasure after farting. And holding the farts in for too long can even make you feel cranky, so make sure you release them whenever you find the opportunity.
If you still feel embarrassed and want to reduce flatulence, try some of the following tips:
- Eat slowly
- Check whether you have a condition that requires medical attention
- Avoid artificial sweeteners and carbonated drinks
- Exercise more
Always remember that even though it is sometimes embarrassing, farting is a perfectly normal body function, and be thankful for your healthy digestive system.
