Now, I have previously written how you can buy organic food on a budget. However, for some people, even that is too much.
The problem with today’s food is that most of the fruits and vegetables are sprayed with pesticides, poisonous substances that can be harmful to our health.
Buying organic food is especially challenging for people living in big cities, where most of the fruits and vegetables are imported and suspicious.
If you want to buy the best organic food, visit the street market and talk to the farmers there.
Pesticides and Human Health
As I mentioned previously, pesticides are harmful for our health. Before I show you how to wash pesticides off your fruits and veggies, I will try to explain just how harmful pesticides are. Just one study here to start you off.
Pesticides have been linked to several diseases, from short term impacts such as nausea, headaches and vomiting, to chronic and long term diseases and conditions such as cancer and endocrine disruption.
Some of the side effects of the constant use of pesticides, such as skin and eye irritation, or headaches, dizziness, fatigue and nausea, can be dramatic and fatal.
And the worst part is, chronic health effects might occur even years after you have been exposed to pesticides.
Not always effects of pesticides are instant. Sometimes, it takes several years for pesticides to start causing harm to your body.
Some studies have shown that there is an increased risk factor for autism disorders in children if the mother was exposed to pesticides.
Another risk factor for children is that when they live in environment rich with pesticides are twice as likely to develop brain cancer.
Last, but not least, pesticides have been known to cause cancer.
Some of the most common long term effects of pesticides include brain, bone, ovarian, prostate, testicular, liver, breast cancer, as well as diseases like leukemia, Hodgkins disease and non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Now, after we’ve been through the harmful effects of pesticides, it is time for me to show you a way how to properly wash your fruits and vegetables and make them pesticides-free, even though they are not organic.
What you need is one cup of apple cider vinegar, one tablespoon of baking soda, water and two tablespoons of lemon juice.
Put all the ingredients in a big bowl, and mix them. Once you have the mixture ready, put the fruits and veggies into the bowl and let them stay there for five minutes.
Afterwards, wash the fruits with water and let them dry. Now, they are ready for eating.
