According to an ancient Egyptian inscription, “Man lives on a quarter of what they eat; the other three-quarters of their doctors”. Abelmoschus esculentus or Hibiscus esculentus, also known as Okra, is a kind of vegetables from Egypt which has long been used as one component in the diet.
Okra has a slimy texture and commonly consumed in some ways; fried, boiled and fermented.
Okra has many benefits, one of which is the provider of a positive effect on nephropathy, or kidney disease.
These benefits were confirmed by a study published in 2005 in Jilin Medical Journal.
The study lasted for six months and took samples from the two groups; one was given Okra and another was given common traditional therapies.
Groups with Okra decreased in urine protein and uric acid.
Health Benefits of Okra
A study published in the Saudi Pharmaceutical Journal confirms that Okra can prevent heart disease because it contains a powerful antioxidant. The study found that Okra is comparable to milk thistle and silymarin in terms of antioxidants and hepaprotective.
The study published in the Journal of Pharmacy & Science Bioallied states that Okra is effective in the treatment of diabetes. Tests carried out on mice, and Okra extract is able to normalize blood sugar levels and lipid profile in rats. Basically, Okra has long been used in traditional medicine for diabetes.
Okra also has anticancer compounds and is known to be extremely effective in the treatment of breast cancer. The researchers found that the lectin contained in Okra, a membrane binding protein, Abelmoschus esculentus (AEL), capable of pushing the death of human breast cancer cells.
Another benefit of Okra is the ability to fight depression. Researchers from the Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences stated that Okra seed extract is capable of acting as a mood lifter agents and antidepressants.
The main reason is its flavonoid and phenol contents. I see that the link between modern researches with the so-called ancient medicine produces an amazing development for the human health.
